FULL-DAY MASTERCLASS Thursday, April 7, 2011 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Designed to Meet the Needs of GPs, LPs, & Managers of Buyout, Growth Equity, Mezzanine, & Lending Funds, as Well as Independent Sponsors, Operating Partners, Portfolio Company Managers, and the Bankers, Lawyers, Accountants, Faculty | Schedule | Registration | Location | Sponsorship | Audio Package | The chemicals and plastics industries are in an expansion mode this year with solid momentum. Both U.S. and global shipments soared in 2010, and the industry is forecasting continued growth for the next five years.
Additionally, right-sizing and cost reduction efforts during the economic downturn have positioned companies well for profitable growth -- with better balance sheets and strong cash flows.
So it’s no surprise that private equity investors are taking renewed interest in these industries.
There’s already been substantial middle-market deal flow over the past 12 months, including acquisitions by Arsenal Capital (Royal Adhesives), Torquest (Pinova Inc.), HIG Capital (Cytec Building Block Chemicals), and Geneva Glen Capital (Flow Polymers), as well as exits such as Monomoy Capital Partners’ sale of magnesium flux producer SRC to Buckingham Capital and Stelaris Capital and Lion Chemical Capital’s successful sale of Excel Polymers at a greater than 4x rate of return.
Corporate M&A activity has also been robust, with large deals such as DuPont’s acquisition of Dansico and BASF’s acquisition of Cognis. But we have also seen corporate interest dip down into the mid-market for assets with strategic relevance. And to fund deals, the chemical giants are divesting themselves of non-core and specialty business units. All of which presents a dynamic environment of middle-market deal opportunities.
Beyond the general economic recovery, key themes driving the industry include sustainability, the need to feed an expanding world population, urbanization, and technologies to improve global drinking water.
And areas like renewable materials, agri-chemicals, personal care, flavors & fragrances, pharmaceutical intermediates, lighter-weight materials, and lithium battery technologies (among many others) -- remain very exciting areas for investment.
No question, this is an excellent time to consider chemicals and plastics. And The Capital Roundtable offers an equally excellent way you can assess the specialized knowledge that leads to success.
To bring you a perspective of the industry, we’re pleased to have as our conference chair Alex Washington, managing director of Wind Point Partners, a Chicago-based middle-market private equity firm managing over $2 billion in capital.
Alex joined Wind Point in 2002 and is a leader of the firm’s chemical industry investment activities, including the acquisitions of ArrMaz Custom Chemicals (successfully exited in 2006) and Vertellus Specialties. He was previously with Whitney & Co. and McKinsey & Co. Alex holds a BA in finance from Morehouse College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Along with Alex, our four panel discussions will feature 20 knowledgeable private equity experts in chemicals and plastics, including GPs, portfolio company operating executives, investment bankers, lenders, consultants, and more. They will share their real-world perspectives, lessons learned, and industry outlooks, including insights on recent deal activity and managing current portfolio companies.

20 Experts Who Live, Eat, and Breathe Chemicals & Plastics.
This conference will focus on the issues and themes that will define the chemicals sector in 2011 and beyond.
For example, in today’s global economy, being a North America-centric company can be a precarious proposition -- Asia and Latin America are main growth areas and your portfolio companies’ participation in these markets may be a requisite to prosper.
You’ll also hear how sustainability is affecting virtually every chemicals and plastics company in a big way. Any manufacturer today is seeking to get more out of less, and the greener your operating standards the higher your valuation can be. We’ll be reviewing recent activities out of Washington and other world capitals, including proposed curbs of global greenhouse gas emissions and the likelihood of federal action on green chemistry regulations.
