With small and middle-market and growth-equity borrowers still facing difficulties finding consistent sources of capital, increasingly Business Development Companies are filling the voids -- and many are generating high yields for their investors.
Because BDCs have the ability to invest across the capital structure, BDCs can be ideal financing sources for growing businesses.
For private equity firms that are considering launching BDCs, the fundraising process is less arduous than what you’re used to -- no having to run from one institutional investor or family office to another.
With access to the public capital markets, BDCs offer a permanent, not periodic, source of capital -- you don’t have to raise a new fund every five years and you don’t have to prematurely exit your portfolio companies to provide investor liquidity.
Moreover, you can use the BDC’s stock to make investments and acquisitions, and in some situations, to incentivize your firm’s employees.
So it’s no surprise there’s substantial interest in BDCs today -- they can generate current income for investors in a low-yield environment, and fill the void that other capital providers have left in the wake of the financial crisis.
The number of BDCs has multiplied significantly over the past several years. Today there are more than 40 BDCs with an aggregate market capitalization of $28 billion.
But launching and managing a BDC is really complicated. The requirements are tricky, the regulations are complex -- and needless to say, to be successful you have to be very, very good at making loans and preserving capital.

We’re extremely pleased to welcome Michael T. Tokarz, Chairman & Portfolio Manager of MVC Capital Inc. in Purchase, New York -- a publicly-traded BDC (NYSE:MVC) -- as our chairman.
Mike is a senior investment professional with more than 30 successful years of lending and investment experience. He was a general partner at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., before joining MVC Capital and founding its investment adviser, The Tokarz Group Advisers LLC, and his private merchant bank, The Tokarz Group.
During his 18 years at KKR, he participated in a variety of leveraged buyouts, financings, restructurings, and dispositions.
Mike currently serves on corporate boards including Walter Energy Inc., Mueller Water Products Inc., Walter Investment Management Corp., IDEX Corp., and CNO Financial Group, as well as serving on the boards of some of MVC Capital’s portfolio companies.
In addition, he’s on the board of Illinois Ventures, a University of Illinois-focused venture capital seed fund and high technology incubator, and is chairman of a related private equity follow-on investment fund. He also serves as the chairman emeritus of the University of Illinois Foundation and its investment and executive committees.
Mike received both an undergraduate degree with high distinction in economics, and an MBA in finance from the University of Illinois. He’s also a certified public accountant. Mike was selected as one of the “Best Corporate Directors in America" by Outstanding Directors Exchange in 2007.
