Owing to its vast size and constant evolution, the transportation, distribution, and logistics industry is yielding middle-market private equity investors more opportunities than ever before.

As a result, one in every 15 private equity investments is in this sector. It’s estimated that 2013 will end up being the PE industry’s most active year for TDL deals, and 2014 is on track to be even more.

Please mark your calendar NOW to attend The Capital Roundtable’s ENCORE conference -- “Private Equity Investing in Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics  Companies”-- being held in midtown New York City on Thursday, December 5.

Private equity investors are watching closely the expansion of e-commerce, i.e., transporting goods from distribution centers to customers’ doorsteps. E-commerce has expanded into a $250 billion segment of the $4.5 trillion overall retailing market, and is growing at 20% a year.

Today, it’s on course to be even better, as TDL companies pop up with a variety of more efficient, less expensive options for “last mile” distribution. These new options are generating a wealth of new investment platforms and consolidations in the middle-market.

Add in the expansion of outsourced services (like driver training and fleet washing), the growth of mobility solutions to serve disabled people (like paratransit and route sharing), the marriage of technology with trucking (like in-vehicle telematics), and you have a marketplace where the possibilities for 2014 are exceptional.

Register to Learn More about Additional Trends

Some additional trends that are impacting TDL deals include --

  • Outsourcing -- providers save truck fleets time and expense with driver sourcing and training, and with sending refueling or washing teams to service fleets during off hours instead of owners having to use drivers’ time
  • Creating Third-party or Fourth-party Logistics -- brokers who have the connections and can take responsibility for transporting goods from overseas directly to customers in the U.S. -- and vice versa
  • Enabling Older or Disabled People -- companies that install technology in personal vehicles for wounded veterans, provide paratransit services for hospital patients, and offer vanpool route-sharing services for elderly people
  • Meeting Safety Regulations -- companies that track maintenance, emissions requirements, and driver workloads are helping fleet owners with safety and productivity
  • Leveraging Niche Opportunities -- for example, distributing patients’ prescriptions to hospitals and healthcare facilities, or perishables like chocolate in temperature-controlled trucks to small or nontraditional retailers like movie theaters, bodegas, and Home Depot stores

We’re delighted to welcome as conference chairman David Mitchell, Managing Director of Transportation Resource Partners in Detroit -- a leading private equity firm where David and his associates have developed multiple shared synergies among the companies in the firm’s large portfolio. TRP is backed by legendary race car driver and team owner Roger S. Penske, Chairman and CEO of Penske Corp. and Penske Automotive Group.

Prior to joining TRP, David spent 12 years as a partner in a growth consulting and financial advisory firm, was a senior manager with Deloitte Consulting in the automotive and manufacturing practice, and a senior consultant with Accenture. He serves on numerous private company boards, as well as on the board of Spy Inc.

David holds a BS in chemical engineering from Notre Dame and an MBA from Stanford Business School.

6 Important Reasons to Register

  • Recognize why 2014 will be a very active year in the “last mile” fulfillment frame with lots of deals to be made.
  • Learn why outsourced services are in demand because they provide cleaner vehicles, easier refueling, safer driving, and extra deliveries per day.
  • Hear why it’s hard to be a generalist in the logistics space and why successful logistics companies must have a unique distinctive advantage to succeed.
  • Realize how the use of telematics in vehicles benefits route optimization, risk management, maintenance, training, and lowered insurance costs.
  • Understand why expanding municipal regulations are generating business for companies that convert existing vehicles for mobility.
  • Discover the importance of building and exploiting shared synergies among TDL portfolio companies.

20 Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics Experts Deliver the Goods

This conference will bring you four panel discussions featuring shared insights from 20 top PE industry professionals who are all successful investors and advisors in TDL companies. You will hear real-world perspectives, lessons learned, and industry outlooks, plus insights on managing current portfolio companies.

You will find out about recent notable industry deals including --

  • Greenbriar Equity Group’s acquisition of Transplace, a provider of transportation management services and logistics technology, from CI Capital Partners.
  • RLJ Equity Partners’ acquisition of R. Thompson Trucking Inc., a provider of trucking and other transportation services in Virginia and North Carolina, from Linx Capital Partners.
  • Greatwide Logistics Services, a portfolio company of Centerbridge Capital Partners, merging with Cardinal Logistics Management to form a single transportation and logistics platform with annual revenue in excess of $1 billion.
  • Platinum Equity’s acquisition and subsequent rebranding of Exel Direct, a provider of “white glove” delivery services for retail brands, from Exel Inc. (The new brand is MXD Group).

By attending this Capital Roundtable conference, we’ll answer questions such as --

  • What makes the TDL sector so attractive to investors?
  • What specific areas within the sector are likely to provide the best opportunities for PE investors through 2014? Specialized delivery and fulfillment? Mobile vehicle servicing? Paratransit operations? Transportation brokerage? Others?
  • Will consolidation continue to be prominent in the sector during 2014?
  • How are lenders approaching TDL deals? What factors are behind their decisions?
  • What are the metrics and valuation guidelines that can help you judge a middle-market TDL deal?
  • What are the misconceptions about middle-market TDL investments -- and what is the reality?
  • How can first-time investors in the space avoid traps and pitfalls?
  • What have been some recent notable deals with middle-market TDL companies?
  • How are new technologies and changing government regulations affecting the marketplace?
  • How are fuel costs going to impact the sector throughout 2014?
  • What are the best practices for managing TDL companies? How do you help management teams improve revenue?
  • What are the most important things a firm has to get right when planning to exit a TDL investment? What are realistic time horizons?
