Today, it’s on course to be even better, as TDL companies pop up with a variety of more efficient, less expensive options for “last mile” distribution. These new options are generating a wealth of new investment platforms and consolidations in the middle-market.


Add in the expansion of outsourced services (like driver training and fleet washing), the growth of mobility solutions to serve disabled people (like paratransit and route sharing), the marriage of technology with trucking (like in-vehicle telematics), and you have a marketplace where the possibilities for 2014 are exceptional.

Some additional trends that are impacting TDL deals include --

  • Outsourcing -- providers save truck fleets time and expense with driver sourcing and training, and with sending refueling or washing teams to service fleets during off hours instead of owners having to use drivers’ time
  • Creating Third-party or Fourth-party Logistics -- brokers who have the connections and can take responsibility for transporting goods from overseas directly to customers in the U.S. -- and vice versa
  • Enabling Older or Disabled People -- companies that install technology in personal vehicles for wounded veterans, provide paratransit services for hospital patients, and offer vanpool route-sharing services for elderly people
  • Meeting Safety Regulations -- companies that track maintenance, emissions requirements, and driver workloads are helping fleet owners with safety and productivity
  • Leveraging Niche Opportunities -- for example, distributing patients’ prescriptions to hospitals and healthcare facilities, or perishables like chocolate in temperature-controlled trucks to small or nontraditional retailers like movie theaters, bodegas, and Home Depot stores
