Faculty | Schedule | Registration | Location | Sponsorship | Audio Package | As global economic fundamentals improve, the transportation, distribution, and logistics sector is a key place to be. It’s the fourth-largest segment of the U.S. economy, estimated at just over a trillion dollars (globally, over $3 trillion). Best of all, it’s famously profitable and largely fragmented.
Berkshire Hathaway’s acquisition last year of Burlington Northern was a compelling vote of confidence.
But the majority of buyouts and mergers take place in the middle-market, where investors face a variety of opportunities to buy and expand platforms with more territories, new capabilities, or ways of reaching new customers.
So by popular demand, The Capital Roundtable is pleased to announce an encore full-day conference on Wednesday, October 5, in New York. You’ll learn the trends, the strategies, and the tactics that will define 2012 and beyond.
Whether you’re new to the marketplace or an experienced transportation, distribution, and logistics investor, plan now to attend --

Just some of the recent upper middle-market activity includes Platinum Equity’s acquisition of barge operator American Commercial Lines. Wayzata Investment Partners’ acquisition of Gainey Corp. And HCI Equity Partners’ add-on acquisition of Bullet Transportation Services to its Roadrunner Transportation Services platform. To serve as chair of this encore conference on Wednesday, October 5, in New York, we’re pleased to welcome back David Panton, co-founder of Navigation Capital Partners in Atlanta. David has spent several years actively evaluating transportation and logistics opportunities. He is chairman of Atlanta-based Brown Trucking, a dominant Southeast regional carrier.
He holds a doctorate in management studies from Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar, a JD from Harvard Law School where he was president of the Harvard Law Review, and a BA in public policy from Princeton University.
Actionable Advice from 20 Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics Experts
Joining David will be a team of 20 panelists sharing their substantial experience with transportation, distribution, and logistics deals. You’ll hear from GPs, portfolio company operating executives, investment bankers, lenders, consultants, and more -- serving up real-world solutions for gaining competitive advantages and growing current holdings.
Because the industry is so fragmented, for new investors, entry into the market is very doable. The ongoing trend to outsource internal activities to third parties helps mean that private equity portfolio companies can be solidly positioned for long‑term growth.
And activity continues to expand at our nation’s ports, airports, canals, and roads, driven in large part by growth in emerging markets and China.
One Focused Day, One Purposeful Conference
You’ll understand why all the conditions are in place for significant deal flow over the coming months. Dealmaking in the sector tends to increase after a recessionary period, as these companies benefit from an improving manufacturing outlook, rising retail sales, and inventory expansion.
For example, in the trucking segment, the most recent quarterly survey by Transport Capital Partners suggests that most company owners are either looking to sell or buy -- not stay with the status quo.
