As 2014 comes to a close, Ernst & Young reports that private equity packaging deals are up 65% in total dollar value versus 2013. Multiples have been on a steady rise since 2011.
In fact, top-notch packaging companies are generating multiples of 8.5 to 9 times EBITDA, compared with multiples of roughly 6.5 times EBITDA just a few years ago, according to Mergers & Acquisitions.
That said, packaging companies’ multiples are not as frothy as in other industries. Also in comparison to other industries, packaging is less cyclical, less volatile, and easier to invest in.
The marketplace is fragmented yet large and dynamic. Although fewer family-owned packaging companies are for sale, larger packaging companies are increasingly divesting niche businesses and private equity owners are looking for opportunities to harvest.
Many companies are well-positioned to lead specific niches, e.g., aerosol cans, thermoform containers, medical device packaging, and wine bottle closures. For example, at the recent big packaging expo, there was major interest in companies selling child-proof closures.
Finally -- few other industries offer such an attractive return on capital – new equipment tends to last 10 or 15 years or more.
To recognize the sector’s multiple strengths, register now for The Capital Roundtable’s ENCORE conference -- “Private Equity Investing in Packaging Companies”
