As 2014 comes to a close, Ernst & Young reports that private equity packaging deals are up 65% in total dollar value versus 2013. Multiples have been on a steady rise since 2011.

In fact, top-notch packaging companies are generating multiples of 8.5 to 9 times EBITDA, compared with multiples of roughly 6.5 times EBITDA just a few years ago, according to Mergers & Acquisitions.

That said, packaging companies’ multiples are not as frothy as in other industries.  Also in comparison to other industries, packaging is less cyclical, less volatile, and easier to invest in.

The marketplace is fragmented yet large and dynamic. Although fewer family-owned packaging companies are for sale, larger packaging companies are increasingly divesting niche businesses and private equity owners are looking for opportunities to harvest.

Many companies are well-positioned to lead specific niches, e.g., aerosol cans, thermoform containers, medical device packaging, and wine bottle closures.  For example, at the recent big packaging expo, there was major interest in companies selling child-proof closures.

Finally -- few other industries offer such an attractive return on capital – new equipment tends to last 10 or 15 years or more.

To recognize the sector’s multiple strengths, register now for The Capital Roundtable’s ENCORE conference --  “Private Equity Investing in Packaging Companies”

Register Now to Gain Insight on the Best Practices That Ensure Success

At this conference you will pick up the newest information on pharmaceutical, dispensing, and other specialized packaging areas -- plus, our panelists will answer important questions such as --

  • How is the drive toward sustainability affecting packaging companies?
  • Can you make money in commodity packaging, or should specialty companies be your preferred choice?
  • Is “smart” packaging with RFID chips finally on the horizon, or are the costs still too high?
  • What are the current trends in high-security and anti-counterfeit packaging? In what sub-sectors does this matter most?
  • Are metal and glass containers being replaced by plastic and paper, or is there still life in these older technologies?
  • What are the best practices for overseeing packaging portfolio companies?
  • What metrics and valuation guidelines can help you judge a middle-market packaging company deal?

Three More Reasons Why You Should Join Us

  1. Learn which secular trends will be driving growth in the packaging sector in 2015, from the adoption of 3D printing to the push toward multiple-use packaging.
  2. Discover how the line between commercial printers and packaging converters continues to blur, and how that spurs platform opportunities.
  3. Hear how new technology is driving single-serving and refillable formats using flexible oxygen barriers that extend product shelf life. And down the road, expect liner-less labels that eliminate waste and slash printing costs.

Recent Middle-Market Packaging Deals
