Today, powerful psychographic and demographic trends are making private equity investing in healthy and better living companies more and more compelling.

For example, a revolution is taking place in preventive care and self-care, as scientific discoveries boost consumer demand for products and services that enhance well-being.

What’s more, advances in medicine, nutrition, and physiology are fueling a broad consumer trend toward healthier living and preventing common diseases.

And at the same time, post-World War II Baby Boomers continue to seek products and services that help them defy the effects of aging and “stay vertical longer.”  And, on the flip side, Millennials and Gen Xers are increasingly open to alternatives to the traditional approaches their parents followed.

Consider these indicators --

  • Collectively, these markets now exceed $1 trillion, and have grown at 7% CAGR for the last fifteen years.
  • The 76 million Baby Boomers in the U.S. are the most affluent demographic -- and 11,000 people turn 50 every day.
  • The North American market for alternative medicine is expected to reach $115 billion by 2015, as consumers are increasingly making their own health decisions.

With this former niche market now an established segment of the economy, it includes mature companies, emerging players, and brand-new innovators.  Understanding the differences and being able to differentiate trends from fads is crucial for investing success.

You’ll be able to approach this dynamic marketplace with confidence and commitment when you attend The Capital Roundtable’s ENCORE conference -- “Private Equity Investing in Healthy, Active, & Better Living Companies,” being held in New York City on Thursday, May 9th.

Here are just 6 important reasons you should attend this conference --

  1. Recognize the market forces that should continue to propel market growth at a rate of three times the GDP.
  2. Learn how consumers’ income determines their propensity to make purchase decisions with limited or no scientific proof.
  3. Find out how to identify the winners, and reject the losers, out of a sea of nutritional and healthy living solutions.
  4. Hear how social media can build affinity between consumers who are proponents of a healthy and better living brands.
  5. Discover how to build businesses with durable operating value that a strategic buyer will one day want.
  6. Realize why consumers’ inclination to pursue longevity makes investing in this market so compelling.

As chair of this conference, we’re delighted to welcome Lou Marinaccio, managing director at North Castle Partners in Greenwich, Connecticut – the pioneering middle-market consumer private equity firm focused on healthy and better living companies.

The companies that North Castle -- and this conference -- target represent some of today’s most in-demand consumer categories --

  • Nutrition -- a nearly $300 billion market including sports nutrition, exotic foods, specialty groceries, nutraceuticals and vitamins, and better-for-you snacks.
  • Natural Personal Care -- also a $300 billion market that includes beauty, fitness, and even pet care.
  • Consumer Health -- a $120+ billion market, weight management, rehabilitation, and alternative medicine.
  • Fitness, Recreation, & Active Lifestyle -- an over $300 billion market that includes health clubs, recreation, sports, travel, outdoor, and other leisure activities.

Lou has over 20 years of experience investing in, advising, and operating consumer and middle-market companies, including over 12 years at North Castle.  He currently serves on the boards of Flatout, Palladio Beauty Group, gloProfessional, and Mineral Fusion Natural Brands.  He previously served on the boards of Atkins/Bora-Bora Organic Foods and Naked Juice, and helps lead North Castle's beauty and personal care investments.

Lou also served as interim CEO of DDF Skin Care, a prior North Castle portfolio company, delivering sales and earnings growth, which led to its sale to Procter & Gamble.

Before going to North Castle, Lou was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, advising consumer, life sciences, retail, and healthcare clients on strategy, business development, and operational improvement issues. He began his career in middle market corporate finance at ABN-AMRO.  Lou received a BBA in finance from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

20 Healthy, Active, & Better Living Experts Will Help Energize Your Profits

In addition to Lou, this conference will feature four panel discussions offering the collective insights from 20 top PE professionals in the healthy and better living industry. You will listen and learn from GPs, operating executives, investment bankers, lenders, consultants, and more -- offering real-world perspectives, lessons learned and industry outlooks, plus insights on managing current portfolio companies.

There will also be a special afternoon caucus featuring a senior corporate development executive and an investment banker discussing what kinds of companies in the healthy and better living sectors that are most sought after – and why.

Plus, you will find out about recent healthy and better living deals that are representative of today’s exciting opportunities, including --

  • Gridiron Capital’s acquisition of Performance Health & Wellness, maker of rehabilitation and wellness products.
  • Pulse Equity Partners’ investment in California health club operator In-Shape.
  • DW Healthcare Partners’ investment in for-profit emergency care training company Health & Safety Institute.
  • Ares Management and Leonard Green & Partners’ joint acquisition of staffing provider CHG Healthcare Services.
  • Bay Bridge Capital Partners’ acquisition of nursing operator Plum Healthcare Group from GI Partners.

By attending this Capital Roundtable conference, you’ll hear how middle-market private equity firms are gaining footholds in this market, or expanding their current presence. We’ll be answering such questions as --

  • Which healthy, active, and better living categories offer the greatest investment opportunities for the coming year?
  • What are the key challenges facing healthy, active, and better living companies for the remainder of 2013? For 2014?
  • How eager are lenders to finance deals in this sector?
  • How will the Affordable Care Act consumer attitudes toward self-care?
  • Which niche areas such as diabetic-friendly or gluten-free are likely to generate the most passion among consumers?
  • What are some of the key metrics for judging a healthy and better living deal?
  • What are the best practices of managing healthy and better living portfolio companies?
  • What are the most important things a firm has to get right when exiting a healthy and better living investment?
