FULL-DAY MASTERCLASS

Thursday, May 12, 2011

8:00 am – 5:00 pm
New York City

Designed to Meet the Needs of GPs, LPs, & Managers of Buyout, Growth Equity, Mezzanine, & Lending Funds, as Well as Independent Sponsors, Operating Partners, Portfolio Company Managers, and the Bankers, Lawyers, Accountants,

& Other Advisors Who Support Them

Faculty | Schedule | Registration | Location | Sponsorship | Audio Package |

As both the economy and investors’ capital accounts heal, private equity is once again outperforming the public benchmarks -- and institutional limited partners’ investment allocations are on the rise.

Yet, as you seek capital from pension, trust, and endowment funds, as well as funds of funds, you’re far from alone.

Although some middle-market funds raised money very successfully, many delayed their fundraising until the beginning of this year.  So the market is exceptionally crowded -- making differentiation more important than ever.

This new reality calls for a more pragmatic approach to fundraising -- you can no longer assume that after a year or so you’ll be done.

  • If you’re putting out a new fund, you have to compete with re-ups and satisfy LPs who have the time to move slowly and scrutinize every aspect of your proposition.
  • If you’re putting together a second fund, you’ll find that your investor base has likely shrunk, or, oftentimes, if it’s stayed the same, people have fewer dollars to invest.

Breaking through takes a compelling story -- it’s a tough, perhaps even an impossible challenge, to be just another me-too fund.

Your strategy does not have to be widely known so long as it is distinctive and will stand up to the due diligence limited partners now have the time to do.  Even a generalist fund can stand out in the crowd if there is an interesting angle such as the backgrounds of its partners.

You also need to do your homework as to which “limiteds” have the staff and resources to evaluate what you bring to the table and also have the money to invest now.  If you’re after a small amount of capital, a huge state pension fund may not be an appropriate target.

Yet some large LPs have an appetite for unusual offerings and can be more approachable than you may think.  Knowing what LPs are looking for is the key to your successful fundraising.

Our last MasterClass™ on succeeding at fundraising was extremely well-received by all attendees -- both experienced and emerging managers alike.  And our goal is to be even more helpful to investors at our twelfth full-day conference on Thursday, May 12, in New York --

Raising Private Equity Funds
From Institutional Investors --
Getting Attention & Interest
In Today’s Crowded Marketplace

As we expect our meeting room to be as crowded as the fundraising market itself, signing up now not only assures you a seat, but also assures that you will receive our special Early Bird Discount.  A generous savings of $400 applies to all reservations made by April 1, 2011.

20 PE Fundraising Experts Ready To Help You Prosper

This conference presents all-new content that you’ll be able to put to immediate use -- from exclusive insights to practical tactics.  You’ll hear how to maximize the dollars from new LPs plus your existing base of LPs -- how to best present your case, avoid the pitfalls, and explain less-than-stellar portfolio performance during the past financial crisis.

You’ll discover which types of funds are developing traction among picky institutional investors.

  • For example, we’ll explore why infrastructure funds are appealing to investors with concerns about inflation.
  • Why the growing areas of green technology and healthcare are in favor.
  • And which emerging market economies are seen as solid performers vis-à-vis those with bubbles in the making.

And we’ll explore the regulations and guidelines that are affecting institutional fundraising.

  • With today’s flight to quality, many GPs have adopted the Institutional Limited Partners Association (ILPA) standard, and you’ll find out if you should join them.
  • Plus, we’ll explain how the Volcker Rule provisions are affecting fundraising for 2011 and beyond.

To guide our attendees through the institutional fundraising maze, we’re delighted to have as our chair one of the most popular speakers at our 2010 conference -- Ross M. Posner, Director at Allstate Investments LLC, the indirect wholly-owned investment management subsidiary of The Allstate Corp. in suburban Chicago.

Ross oversees the Americas business of Allstate Private Equity.  Allstate’s Private Equity’s portfolio is approximately $3 billion, including more than75 partnerships in more than 25 different countries.

Prior to joining Allstate Private Equity, Ross spent 11 years as a principal investor in middle-market private equity.  Most recently, he was a principal at Heritage Partners, the leading firm investing in family owned businesses, with $1.4 billion of capital under management.

Previously, he was a partner at Ridge Capital leading acquisitions in the lower middle-market. Ross started his career at JP Morgan, in New York and London.  He has an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a BS from Syracuse University.

Register now to get the answers that can get you more capital, more quickly --

  • Will institutional investors be maintaining, or increasing, their middle-market private equity allocations in 2011?
  • Are institutional investor expectations realistic, and what return profile is guiding their thinking?
  • What fund types presently have the most appeal for institutional investors?
  • Should you be adopting the ILPA principles, and is there a potential downside?
  • Which institutional investors are more approachable than others?
  • What are some of the key criteria to be used when choosing a placement agent today?
  • Is this a good time or a risky time to be an emerging fund manager?
  • Who are the fund managers that have done superior jobs of differentiating their funds?
  • What are the key presentation mistakes that can instantly sour investors?
  • Why are the most important points you must make in your presentations?
  • And much, much more.

You’ll Make Valuable Contacts And Connections All Day Long

Built into the day’s agenda are excellent networking opportunities -- at planned breaks and an open lunch -- where you can get to know your fellow attendees and our featured speakers.  You’ll be able to exchange business cards and fundraising plans in a comfortable, convivial setting.

You should attend this conference if you are a --

  • GP looking to beef up your fundraising techniques for new funds or add-ons.
  • GP who wants to improve presentation skills and better target LPs.
  • First-time general partner who wants to get your share of funds already allocated for emerging managers.
  • Placement agent seeking new funds and new marketing strategies for this demanding regulatory environment.
  • Private Equity communications professional involved with presentations to investors.
  • Attorney or advisor who represents GPs or LPs.
  • Executive search professional recruiting for the Private Equity industry.

Remember, register with our Early Bird Discount by April 1, 2011, and you’ll save $400 off our standard fee!  Seats are available right now, but not for long, so please make your reservation now so you’re not disappointed.  We’ll be looking forward to greeting you.
