The new barbarians are at the gate. Hardly a day passes when an activist situation is not front-page news. Recent targets include even behemoths like Time Warner, McDonalds, and General Motors. No company is safe, no matter how large.
Yet, while a lot of attention has been focused on the reasons and the impact of this activism, little has been said about how activists do what they do or about the tools they use.
Strategies are diverse --
- Some work behind the scenes in long-term partnership with managements, while others are less patient and use public filings and proxy fights to push their agendas.
- Some fight against announced mergers or go for appraisal rights to get full value for their investments.
- Some try to highlight the value of a company’s assets such as real estate, while others hope to increase value by changing management.
No matter how they do it, the goal is to create shareholder value.
The focus of this MasterClass will be on the practical aspects of being an activist investor.
Eric Rosenfeld, head of Crescendo Partners, a well-known activist firm, has invited a team of 17 prominent speakers who will share their experience and the ways they do things.
Among the investors who have already agreed to participate are –
- Bill Ackman, Pershing Square
- James Altucher, Formula Capital, & author, “Trade Like a Hedge Fund”
- Philip Goldstein, Opportunity Partners
- Tom Hudson, Pirate Capital
- Jim Mitarotonda, Barington Capital
- Manny Pearlman, Liberation Investment Group
- Peter Puccetti, Goodwood
- and many others
“In this MasterClass top activist investors and their advisors will share with you our war stories, what we have learned over the years, the types of targets we like to choose and how we go about increasing shareholder value”, says Rosenfeld. "The event will help attendees develop their understanding of the tools, pros and cons, benefits and risks, opportunities and pitfalls of being an activist.”
